Diogo Jota: Pundit points to ‘grey area’ as controversial Liverpool footage analysed
Paul Robinson is adamant Diogo Jota was fouled in the build-up to Southampton’s goal against Liverpool on Tuesday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one suggested referee Martin Atkinson got it wrong at St. Mary’s but questioned whether VAR should have intervened.
As shown on Sky Sports (17 May), Jota went to ground following a challenge from Lyanco moments before Nathan Redmond’s opener on Tuesday night.
Jurgen Klopp was furious over the officials’ decision not to penalise Lyanco for the incident.
The goal would ultimately be indecisive though with the Reds recovering to win 2-1 and take the Premier League title race to the final day of the season.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if the officials should have disallowed Redmond’s goal, Robinson said: “It is a grey area.
“How far back do you go? It is a difficult one.
“I’m not so sure VAR should have gone back for that. It is a matter of opinions though.
“It was a foul but how far back do you go? There has to be a cut-off somewhere.
“It was the same phase of play that Southampton scored from, so maybe it should have been looked at. I don’t think it’s a clear one for the officials though.”

Liverpool are one point behind Man City in the Premier League table.
They welcome Wolves to Anfield on Sunday.
