Diogo Jota: Whelan fears ‘long-term’ injury blow after significant Liverpool update
Noel Whelan has raised fears over a “long-term” injury for Diogo Jota at Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp’s update.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old has been a standout performer for the Reds in recent weeks.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday (18 February), Klopp confirmed Jota will miss Saturday’s game against Norwich City as the Reds await an update on the severity of his injury.
The Portuguese star limped off in Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan after twisting his ankle.
Whelan admitted losing the in-form attacker would be a bitter pill to swallow ahead of next week’s League Cup final.
Reacting to the injury update, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Oh God, they’re losing a player that’s been carrying the goal tally while your two top scorers have been away in Mane and Salah.
“That was the biggest fear for Liverpool wasn’t it? Where were the goals going to come from?
“He took that mantle straight on his shoulders and proved that there is life after Mane and Salah when it comes to goals.
“I think he’s been one of the most improved players and impressive players at Liverpool since he came in. Not only with his performances but with his assists and goals.
“Those really dangerous forward runs, that instinctive-ness in front of goal as well and that quality of finishing. Let’s hope it’s not a long term,
“It is not ideal. They will assess it. We want to see the best team and the best players out there in cup finals.”

Jota has scored 17 goals in 32 appearances for Liverpool this season.
Only Salah (24) has netted more.
