Aberdeen manager McInnes has seemed like the natural fit since before Caixinha was sacked.
The former Rangers midfielder has probably taken Aberdeen as far as he can although recent reports linking him with the West Brom job could be why the Ibrox board are forced to turn to McLeish.
McInnes ticks a lot of the boxes Rangers are looking for but there’s either a split in the Ibrox boardroom or Aberdeen are playing hardball.
If McInnes is the preferred choice to take over then Rangers are going to have to show make their play soon and bring the 46-year-old back to Ibrox.
With a double-header against Aberdeen just around the corner, the longer it’s drawn out the more difficult it’s likely to get.
