Djed Spence faces new Tottenham axe – expert

Djed Spence has been told to “knuckle down” and work hard to get his Tottenham career back on track after missing out on the Europa League squad.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected at the club, revealed that there were doubts over whether Spence would be included in the 25-man Premier League squad.

Ange Postecoglou is said to have been impressed with the defender’s work in pre-season and is now willing to integrate him back into his side.

As a result, he has insisted that the right-back has done well to get back into consideration under the boss, but must continue his hard work.

Robinson claims Spence will not be too disappointed to have missed out on the Europa League squad and is prepared to get back in the manager’s good books.

After an unsuccessful loan move to Leeds United, followed by a mixed spell with Genoa in Serie A, many expected the defender to leave Spurs for good in the summer window.

Ahead of the transfer window, Football Insider revealed that the club had planned to accept offers for the right-back should any arrive.

However, his work during pre-season has impressed Postecoglou and opened up the possibility of a return to the first team.

Djed Spence told what he must do to get Tottenham career back on track

Spence arrived at Tottenham from Middlesbrough in 2022 following an impressive spell in the Championship, but has made just eight appearances for the club.

However, he has featured from the bench twice already this season and is staking a claim for more regular minutes despite the other options in the squad.

Robinson has insisted that the right-back must continue to work hard, and strong displays in his limited Premier League minutes should help him become more established under Postecoglou.

Dejd Spence has done well to get back into the fold and to get back into the manager’s thinking,” he told Football Insider.

I don’t think there was even a question of whether he’d even be in the Premier League squad this year, never mind the Europa League squad.

I think the manager has got cover in his position and the versatility of his other players will cover that role.

Djed Spence has done well to get back into the fold, but I don’t think he’ll be too disappointed to have missed out on the Europa League squad.

Tottenham

He’s got to get his career back on track. It’s faltered for too long now.

He went to Tottenham with big hopes and expectations and it’s not worked. The loan spells haven’t worked either. It’s up to him to knuckle down and try to get some games under his belt.
