Djeidi Gassama ‘expected to leave Rangers’ – ‘There’s no doubt’

Danny Rohl is likely to offload Djeidi Gassama in the summer transfer window as part of his rebuild at Rangers.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who does not believe Rohl will allow Gassama to leave in January.

Rangers have no intentions of selling Gassama in January despite the 22-year-old struggling to make an impact at Ibrox in his first season at the club.

Gassama had previously played under Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, but the winger only has two goals and one assist since his appointment as Rangers manager in October.

Djeidi Gassama ‘to be gone in the summer’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Rohl wants to keep the bulk of his Rangers squad together for the second half of the season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness does not believe Gassama is part of Rohl’s long-term plans at the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think they’re going to stick with him just for now, but I think there’s no doubt he’ll be gone in the summer.

“Look, he won a penalty the other week. I think he hasn’t really shone, but there was some talent there. But I think that Danny Rohl is happy to keep a reasonably strong squad because they got a chance to push on.

And so I don’t think he’s going to be divesting himself of anybody. I don’t think he’s going to have many more new signings coming in. And so I think Gassama will be one of those that he wants to keep in the squad and playing probably a bit more regularly in the second part of the season. But I do expect him to be gone as part of a Rohl makeover when he has a bit more time in the summer.”

Rangers make late January move

Rangers are firmly in the title race, with Hearts’ 2-2 draw with Celtic meaning they closed the gap on the league leaders to four points.

Rohl only wants to bolster his squad further in the remainder of the January window, with the Glasgow club lining up a new striker.

Rangers have made a bid to sign Hansa Rostock striker Ryan Naderi, who has scored 13 goals and contributed nine assists for the German side.
