Noel Whelan has questioned whether Dele Alli wants to stay at Tottenham after Jose Mourinho’s bombshell.
The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has suggested the Portuguese boss “has seen enough” and that the club will be considering their options ahead of the January transfer window.
The 24-year-old was hooked at half-time against Royal Antwerp on Thursday night and Mourinho stated his team selection would be “very easy” moving forward in a clear hint over how the future lies for underperformers like Alli.
Whelan has questioned whether the attacking midfielder, who has made just three starts all season, still wants to be at Spurs and suggested that the club may be considering giving him the green light to leave.
Whelan told Football Insider “Dele Alli looked very average, almost to the point where does he even want to be at the club?
“I think Jose Mourinho’s got a point, that’s why he’s not in the side. He hasn’t been good enough and he wasn’t effective on Thursday night and like he said, the best XI is the XI he puts out in the Premier League matches.
“I don’t think it’s it but I think for Jose Mourinho, maybe he’s seen enough. He’s not getting what he wants out of the player – whether it’s the manager can’t get the best out this player, whether it’s the player feels like he needs a different challenge, something’s not right.
“The chemistry isn’t right there and Dele Alli, his form has completely plummeted in the last 12-18 months at that football club.
“Something’s not right, maybe it’s time to think about what they can do in January or if he’s going to fight and show a bit more quality and desire in that team. Something’s got to change.”
