‘Doesn’t play well’ – Peter Schmeichel blasts Liverpool duo after recent form

By Danny Wright

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has blasted Liverpool goalkeepers Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet after their recent form has seen their side concede a high number of goals.

Karius, 24, was picked to play between the sticks against Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night and made a crucial error in a 1-1 draw.

The German shot-stopper was coming in for Mignolet, 29, after he has been in goals while the Reds have seen themselves let in an unprecedented tally of goals in the Premier League which is only matched by teams near the bottom of the standings.

While Schmeichel believes that Mignolet has been playing better recently, he still thinks that he is the source of all the problems that Liverpool have in their defence due to his lack of presence in the area.

The ex-Man United and Denmark goalkeeper has also strangled claimed that Karius has been compared to Manuel Neuer previously, even though he deems his form to have been very poor since moving to Anfield.

“He brings Karius in, who apparently has a reputation of being close to Manuel Neuer, he’s played a few games and he doesn’t play well. So, Jurgen Klopp has to go back to Simon Mignolet, who actually is playing OK,” said Schmeichel, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“I think he’s improved. But he’s not that guy that controls the back four. He’s not that guy that saves them 10-12 points a season. He does save them points, but he gives them away – he nearly did that against Leicester but ended up winning it with the penalty save.

“That’s the insecurity he breeds into the Liverpool defence. And the defenders are spreading even more insecurity.”

Mignolet has been Jurgen Klopp’s No 1 choice this season, however Karius has suddenly started appearing in the Champions League group stages having played against Sevilla and now Spartak.

He has made one appearance in the Premier League, which came in the 4-0 hammering of Arsenal in August, but lost his place in the starting XI immediately after the international break.

Mignolet has made seven appearances this term, conceding 14 goals in the process.
