Exclusive: Celtic in advanced talks to seal deal for talent spotter after he quits Sunderland
EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke
Celtic are in advanced talks to seal a deal for top talent spotter Mick Doherty, Football Insider sources understand.
The Scottish giants are confident that former Everton, Chelsea and Sunderland senior scout Doherty will join their scouting network, most likely as chief scout.
Sources close to the situation have told Football Insider that Celtic head of recruitment Lee Congerton has masterminded a move for Doherty, who quit the Black Cats last month following their relegation from the Premier League.
Congerton was appointed by the Scottish champions in March with the brief of managing the club’s recruitment and scouting operation, including their network of overseas spies.
He has targeted Doherty due to his excellent track record during a scouting career in which he has unearthed Wayne Rooney as well as the likes of Seamus Coleman and Shkodran Mustafi.
Doherty was brought in by David Moyes at Sunderland following their lengthy association at Everton, but decided to quit after carrying on for a time following the manager’s exit.
If he agrees a deal with Celtic, Doherty will be responsible for unearthing players at all levels of the club.
In other Celtic news, Chris Sutton has named the player he wants the club to sign more than any other this summer.
