Doherty tipped to quit Tottenham after deal is agreed – pundit

Paul Robinson claims Matt Doherty could leave Tottenham in January after the arrival of Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

The former Spurs stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as the club confirmed another defensive signing on deadline day.

Tottenham announced the signing of Emerson from Barcelona on Tuesday (31 August).

The Brazilian joins Doherty, 29, and Japhet Tanganga as Nuno Espirito Santo’s right-back options.

The 22-year-old academy product has been the Portuguese manager’s first-choice in the Premier League so far.

Doherty has only played seven minutes in the Premier League this season.

When asked if the right-back could leave the club in January, Robinson told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs, “Yeah, possibly.

“It depends what system the manager wants to play really. It is really surprising actually, Nuno relied on him at Wolves.

“Clearly, it hasn’t worked for him at Tottenham whether it was under Jose or Nuno.

“He hasn’t played to the level we expect. Whether he does get the opportunity with Tanganga and Emerson ahead of him, it may be that he moves on in January.

“It looks like Nuno is using a four, not a five, which could mean his chances are limited going forward.”

Last season, Doherty made 29 appearances for Spurs as he struggled to nail down a starting position under Jose Mourinho.

He has racked up minutes this season after becoming Nuno’s right back of choice in the UEFA Conference League.
