Noel Whelan was blown away by Robin Koch in his latest Leeds United display and claimed now it is clear why the club signed him.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former United striker hailed Koch for his rapid turnaround in performances.
It was the second time the club’s latest senior signing – recruited for £13million from Frankfurt – had played alongside club captain Cooper and Leeds have won both games.
The club had made signing White a top priority this window after his impressive loan spell last season but Brighton made it clear that they were not going to sell him to a direct rival.
Asked by Football Insider what he thought of Koch’s display at Bramhall Lane on Sunday, Whelan said: “Better, much better. We’ve seen glimpses of why he’s come to Leeds United and why they went for him.
“He’s dominant in the air, strong, can cover the ground quick and he’s decent on the ball.
“Against Sheffield United, the way he dominated centre-forwards and his positioning was spot on.
“We just see now, after an extra week of training, that relationship between him and Cooper is getting stronger.
“The understanding between the two of them on how to play together and cover each other’s backs.
“They need to build that relationship like we had last year with Cooper and Ben White.
“It’s going to take a little bit of time but we saw rapid improvement with Koch’s performance. He’s cut out the mistakes and doing what’s required of him with clearances and heading ability as well.
“Defensively and in the opposition half he was excellent, he really was.
“You could see that positional sense between the two of them really growing in that game.”
