Done deal: Celtic agree terms with former Rangers youngster

By Harvey Byrne

Celtic midfielder Joe Thomson has joined Scottish Championship side Dumbarton on loan, it was announced on Friday.

The Hoops confirmed on their official Twitter account that the 19-year-old midfielder would be joining the Scottish second-tier club.

The Paisley-born youngster will join Stevie Aitken’s side as they travel to Dumbarton for their season opener on Saturday.

Thomson joined Celtic from Rangers in 2009 at the age of 12 after three years at the Hoops’ fierce rivals.

The youngster made his first team competitive debut for Celtic when he came on during the second half of the club’s 3–1 league win away at Dundee United in 2015 and he also appeared in last season’s Challenge Cup.

Thomson has won 27 caps for Scotland across the various age groups, which include his current 10 for the Scottish Under-19s side.

The young midfielder played in nine encounters in last season’s UEFA Youth League scoring two goals and he also has two years left on his current Celtic contract.

Brendan Rodgers currently has a host of central midfielders to choose from, which includes Nir Bitton, Scott Brown, Stefan Johansen and new signing Kristoffer Ajer and Thomson could have found himself some way down in the pecking order next season.

In other Celtic transfer news, the Hoops are on the verge of completing the signing of Aston Villa star Scott Sinclair.
