A deal is all but done for Celtic to sign Australian teenager Leo Mazis next week, according to a report.
The Daily Mail are reporting that the 17-year-old midfielder will sign from Belconnen United on a three-year contract with the coming days after impressing Brendan Rodgers during a three-week trial period last year.
The Hoops have already made one signing in January with experienced centre-back Marvin Compper joining from Leipzig.
A deal is also expected to be struck this week for St Mirren’s Lewis Morgan, for a fee worth £300,000 that will see the winger return to the Championship side on loan for the rest of the season as Rodgers begins to put together a squad for next season.
Football Insider verdict
This signing definitely falls into the category of ‘projects’. It seems unlikely that Mazis will be anywhere near Celtic’s first-team for a few seasons, as he will be spending time in the development squad, hopefully playing in the UEFA Youth League. That can only be good for him as he gets used to moving across the world to play for his new side. If he proves to be anywhere near as successful as his fellow countrymen Mark Viduka and Tom Rogic have been at the Hoops then this transfer will be a success, but this signing is one for the future.
