Tottenham agree terms with midfielder as deal done
By Will Butcher
Harry Winks has put pen to paper on a new deal that will extend his stay with Tottenham until the summer of 2022.
The 21-year-old has been rewarded after breaking into Spurs’ first team on a regular basis this season, proving to be another example of Mauricio Pochettino’s faith in younger players.
Tottenham announced the news on their official Twitter account, which sees Winks extend his stay for a further year with his previous deal set to expire in the summer of 2021.
Winks’ new deal is another addition to a long list of players to renew terms with the north London club this season, including Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Jan Vertonghen,
Despite having plenty of competition from midfielders such as Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama, Winks has proven that he has what it takes to compete.
Making 25 appearances in all competitions this season, Spurs’ number 29 has started eight games and even got his name on the score sheet for the first time in the dramatic 3-2 win over London rivals West Ham.
Winks could now celebrate his new contract by appearing against Belgian side Genk in the Europa League on Thursday night, as Spurs look to book their place in the round of 16.
Football Insider verdict:
Tying Winks down is a top piece of business by Spurs as they look to keep a hold of their best young talents and build the team around them. The Spurs academy graduate has shown excellent potential this season, proving to be technically gifted and confident when in possession of the ball. Known for his driving runs from midfield and providing an excellent array of passing, Winks is not shy to get into the box while showing a steeliness in his own defensive third. In an era where the box-to-box midfielder is dying out, Winks could give Spurs an extra dimension that other teams do not possess at White Hart Lane for many years to come after extending his stay until 2022.
In other Tottenham news, fans have urged Pochettino to start this 22-year-old against Genk.
