I don't trust them - Paul Merson predicts Liverpool clash v Newcastle

By Danny Wright

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that Liverpool will have enough about them to see off an impressive Newcastle United side when they meet at St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

Merson has predicted that the Reds will earn a 3-1 win against Rafa Benitez’s men and has admitted that he would have put them down to clean sheet if he had more trust in Jurgen Klopp’s defence.

Liverpool go into the game after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night while Newcastle will be trying to bounce back to winning ways after losing to Brighton last weekend.

Merson is certain that there will be goals in the tie and is expecting Newcastle to push forward in search of them to try and capitalise on a poor Reds defence.

“Liverpool could have won 10-1 in the Champions league after the chances they created the other night. With the attacking talent at their disposal they will always create chances and at St James’ Park I don’t see it being any different,” he said on the Sky Sports website.

“Newcastle, backed by their home crowd will also go for it which could play into Jurgen Klopp’s hands. I did initially write down 3-0 to Liverpool but I’m going to have to change my mind to 3-1 because I don’t trust Liverpool at the back. However Liverpool are class going forward and I’d be shocked if Newcastle coped with them.”

Liverpool have only won one of their last four meetings with Newcastle and haven’t earned victory at St. James’ Park since their 6-0 demolition of the Magpies there in 2013.

The Merseysiders are just two points behind Benitez’s side going into their meeting this weekend, meaning that the Championship title holders could infact leapgfrog them should an unexpected result occur.

In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies are on the verge of announcing some big contract news.
