Door has opened for Joe Gomez at Liverpool after confirmed news – pundit

Kevin Campbell has suggested Ibrahima Konate’s injury has opened the door for Joe Gomez at Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said Gomez, 25, can improve his standing in the pecking order at Anfield while Konate, 23, is out.

Konate suffered an injury during Liverpool’s final pre-season friendly against Strasbourg (31 July).

A relayed by club media (4 August), the centre-half revealed he will “spend some time off the pitch” with the problem.

Jurgen Klopp’s side drew 2-2 at Fulham in their opening Premier League fixture of the season.

Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip started at Craven Cottage.

When asked by Football Insider if Konate’s injury presents Gomez with an opportunity, Campbell said: “There is plenty of cover there.

“Joe Gomez can provide cover in a few positions. I think it brings him back into the fold as a centre-half.

“The problem is, he is still backup to Van Dijk and Matip. They are the first choice.

“Konate was given lots of game time in the Champions League last season because of Konate’s pace and physicality.

“Gomez might get an opportunity to play while Konate is out. If he does get that chance, he needs to take it.

“He has signed a new deal and is going to be there for the foreseeable future. He needs to take his opportunity to break back into the Liverpool side.”
