Dr Dan: Man United could ‘sabotage’ big six rivals after talks reported

The fan advisory board at Man United could play a role in forcing through the proposed Premier League owners’ charter.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the powers of the newly-formed supporter-led committee.

Premier League clubs are engaged in talks over the mooted owners’ charter, which many feel will safeguard clubs from opportunist investors.

But the Times reported last Wednesday (8 December) that the so-called ‘big six’ are digging in their heels and want changes to the bill.

They are understood to be reluctant to agree to the facet of the treaty which asserts that European qualification must be based on sporting merit.

Plumley claims that United’s fan advisory panel, established in November, could play an indirect role in the battle to get the bill passed.

“There is no constitutional arrangement yet,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“The club themselves have said there is a big regulatory and legal aspect to this. So any sabotage of the bill would come through indirect means.

“This is a way to get a voice at the table. This is absolutely something they can talk this through with the owners.

“But we are still some way off the point where they can actively contribute to the decision making process.

“This in turn will have links to the fan-led review and the implementation of it.

“It’s a step in the right direction. If everything is aligned so fans have a voice, this is a step in the right direction.”

United’s owners have committed to what they call a “new era of dialogue” with fans after the Super League collapse in April this year.

The Red Devils’ were slated to play Brentford tonight but a Covid outbreak at Carrington has forced the match to be postponed.
