Dr Dan: Tottenham chief Paratici could face ‘severe consequences’ after probe update

The allegations surrounding Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici “are severe”.

So says football finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the probe launched by Italian financial authorities.

Sky Sports reported (30 November) that Paratici, 49, is among six people under investigation for financial corruption at Juventus.

The transfer of now Spurs defender Cristian Romero from Juventus to Atalanta, which Paratici negotiated in 2020, is said to be under scrutiny.

Paratici could be called to give evidence on the matter in early December after Italy’s financial police raided offices in Turin.

He was appointed Tottenham’s managing director of football in the summer.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the latest, Plumley said: “The allegations are severe in the context of Italian football.

“They may have severe consequences for Juventus.

“It is linked to capital gains from transfer sales. It is quite high in Italy. I would not say it is an unusual practice. It is something that happens all of the while with transfer fees. This is about those numbers being inflated.

“Looking at previous history at what happens to club, the consequences could be severe. AC Milan and Inter Milan were both investigated for similar offences in 2008. Both clubs were sanctioned.

“In 2018, Cesena were deducted three points for repeated infringements of this.”

“The difficulty is, it is hard to determine a player’s true market value. It is not an easy algorithm. Clubs will always argue that they are worth a little bit more in an open market.”
