Dundee duo to Rangers: ‘Double swoop on the cards’ in late-signing blizzard

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has urged Rangers to sign “very promising” Dundee duo Lyall Cameron and Josh Mulligan.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the double swoop would represent a shift to a more “long-term” strategy from transfer chiefs at Ibrox.

Cameron and Mulligan, both 22, are both out of contract at Dundee at the end of this season and Rangers have been urged to sign the duo by ex-Gers defender Andy Halliday.

Both players have been regular starters in the Scottish Premiership this term and are Scotland Under-21 internationals.

Rangers have already completed the loan signing of Lille star Rafael Fernandes this month.

Rangers told to complete Cameron and Mulligan deals

Wyness insisted moves for Mulligan and Cameron would be worthwhile after Philippe Clement’s side lined up with 11 different nationalities in the win over Celtic earlier this month (2 January).

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The overarching policy at Rangers recently has been focused on the short-term, and they’ve got to look long-term.

“In this case, the young talent available in Mulligan and Cameron is in Scotland – so that’s great.

“If I’m not wrong, Rangers had 11 different nationalities in their lineup recently – that’s not really their identity.

“So to bring in two very promising young Scottish players from Dundee would be in keeping with the identity.

“I think Scottish players would also have better resale value into the Premier League as well.

“It would be the right thing short-term but also in the long-term plan for Rangers too, which the new board have come in to try and fix.”
