Early Tottenham team news: Key duo to miss Watford clash
By Dominic Toner
Tottenham defenders Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker will miss the club’s New Year’s Day match against Watford.
The first-team regulars both picked up yellow cards in Wednesday’s 4-1 win against Southampton and will serve a one-game suspension as a result.
Spurs could be short of senior defenders against Watford as Toby Alderweireld missed the Southampton victory with a virus and it’s unclear when he will be available again.
Mauricio Pochettino will have to make do without Vertonghen and Walker in their next game, who would both be included in the club’s strongest XI.
Vertonghen is regarded as one of Spurs’ first-choice centre-backs and has played every minute of the Premier League campaign so far, but that streak will be forced to end against Watford.

The 29-year-old has been a reliable defender for the north London club since his arrival in 2012 and has a formidable partnership alongside Alderweireld.
He will be bitterly disappointed about missing the next game, but it means he will be available for the highly anticipated clash against Chelsea just three days later.
Walker is another regular feature along the Spurs backline and has played in every league game this season so far.
The right-back has transformed into a constant performer for both club and country, but it means that his understudy Kieran Trippier is likely to get a chance to impress Pochettino against Watford.
