Ed Woodward to Everton? Keith Wyness lifts lid on CEO appointment
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted ex-Man United CEO Ed Woodward would not be a good fit for a role with the Toffees.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Merseysiders need a chief who “understands the history, the fanbase and the football side”.
As has been widely reported, incoming Everton owner Friedkin is in talks with JP Morgan to restructure the club’s £600million debt.
Woodward worked as an investment banker at the financial giant in the 1990’s and reportedly maintains strong links at the firm, sparking rumours about a potential appointment at Goodison.
He left his role as executive vice-chairman of Man United in 2022 after 10 years at Old Trafford.
Everton are on the hunt for a new CEO as Friedkin gets his feet under the table on Merseyside, with Colin Chong currently in the role on an interim basis.
Woodward not likely to land Everton role, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I was amazed when I heard these rumours.
“I don’t know Ed, but I don’t think he’s got the skill set Everton need right now.
“A lot of the issues he would lead on would be financial. He’s an accountant by trade.
“The Friedkins have got a very strong financial team, so I don’t know if it’s too important to have someone with that knowledge as CEO.
“What will be important is having someone who understands the history, the fanbase and the football side – the structure of the academy and the Premier League politics.

“I don’t think Ed Woodward would be a good fit.
“I’m keeping my eyes peeled at the moment, because I don’t think he’d be the right way to go.”
