Eddie Howe handed boost vs Wolves as Newcastle United star ‘like gold dust’ returns to training

Eddie Howe looks set to welcome a key figure back to his Newcastle United squad ahead of facing Wolves.

Newcastle played out a goalless draw with Leeds United before the international break, a result which saw the Magpies slump to 17th in the Premier League table after three matches.

Jacob Ramsey joined Newcastle as one of their big-money additions over the summer, but the 24-year-old is the latest of Howe’s players to pick up an injury at St James’ Park.

After losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool and Callum Wilson on a free transfer, the Magpies need as much talent on the pitch as possible right now, so the latest update will be very welcome.

Joelinton returns to Newcastle United training

While many rival fans in the Premier League detest Joelinton‘s presence in the centre of midfield, Newcastle fans are in love with the Brazilian, so to see him hobble off against Liverpool was difficult.

However, according to Newcastle journalist Joel Bland, the 29-year-old has returned to training ahead of a clash against Wolves on Saturday, 13 September, clearly meaning that he could be in contention to feature.

Howe knows just how crucial Joelinton is to the team. In November 2024 [Reuters], he said: “Joelinton is like gold dust because wherever you put him, you know he’s going to do a good job. His attitude never changes in training.”

What is Eddie Howe’s record against Wolves?

If recent history is anything to go by, Newcastle should be able to secure all three points in front of a packed-out St James’ Park for their first win of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.

The Magpies are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with the Old Gold, dating back to April 2022, when Chris Wood scored the only goal in a 1-0 win.

That means Howe has only lost one game to Wolves during his tenure at St James’ Park, which bodes well for the clash this weekend.

Newcastle wanted to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen, but the striker stayed at Wolves after signing permanently this summer, so Howe’s side will need to look out for him through the middle.
