Eddie Howe pushing for Newcastle to agree new contract with ‘incredible’ player

Eddie Howe and Newcastle are considering the next steps to retain key personnel whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season.

Fabian Schar has been compared to Virgil van Dijk for his heroics this season according to the stats with the Magpies keeping a league-high five clean sheets in seven Premier League games.

Yet, the Switzerland international is one of the many names who could be set to depart from St James’ Park with his current deal expiring at the end of the campaign.

Former Leeds goalkeeper target Nick Pope is also set to leave the club even after Newcastle missed out on James Trafford in the summer to ensure long-term stability to the position moving forward.

Kieran Trippier another Newcastle player set to leave at the end of the 2025-26 season

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Howe is actively pushing for the Toon to consider extending Kieran Trippier‘s contract.

The right-back is one of six permanent players set to depart when the season’s curtains close with the former Bournemouth manager hailing him as an “incredible” player (Belfast Telegraph, 14 October 2022).

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast over where the Magpies stand on the Englishman’s ongoing contract situation, I explained: “I don’t think they’ll be willing to let him go.

“Eddie Howe was quite open and public in what he said about Kieran Trippier’s future at Newcastle. He wants him to stay. He still says he remains influential as ever. It’s not just on the pitch, it’s off the pitch as well.

“He’s still a real key figure and leader inside that Newcastle dressing room. And again, he will have a big role to play on the pitch.

“He’s still a key figure for Eddie Howe going forward. He’s going to be needed definitely in the starting line-up in the next few weeks due to that injury to Tino Livramento.

“But look, I think Eddie Howe rates Kieran Trippier very highly. I’m sure he will push for Trippier to get a new contract.”

Tino Livramento new contract rejection to accelerate Trippier staying at Newcastle with Eddie Howe

Sources told Football Insider on 14 September that Newcastle are set to offer Livramento a new contract amid interest from Man City.

The 22-year-old is tied down to play under Howe until June 2028 yet his outstanding contract length will not deter the Cityzens from splashing the cash as they look for a long-term right-back replacement.

If the former Southampton man rejects the new contract in search of a lucrative move to the Etihad, that could see the Toon ramp up their talks with Trippier over a new deal.

A potential Livramento exit in January or next summer would leave the ex-Cherries boss with no recognised right-back which would create a far from ideal situation at St James’ Park ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
