Eddie Howe sack latest: PiF verdict revealed, ‘we’ve seen the Newcastle pictures’

Newcastle United exited meekly from the FA Cup last week to seal off another chance at potential silverware for Eddie Howe’s side.

The Magpies missed out on progression to the quarter-finals but will face Liverpool later this month (16 March) with the chance to end their 70-year domestic trophy drought in the League Cup.

Howe’s side sit sixth in the Premier League and will be keen to return to the Champions League next season after missing out on European football entirely last term.

The English boss arrived at St James’ Park in 2021 shortly after the club’s Saudi-backed takeover and has transformed fortunes on Tyneside.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has given his verdict on Howe‘s job security ahead of the Wembley showdown with Liverpool.

‘Newcastle under pressure’ but Howe has fans’ understanding, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested Newcastle will be under “overwhelming” pressure to deliver silverware – but insisted Howe has the understanding of the fans and board.

He has previously taken Newcastle to the League Cup final – where they lost 2-0 against Man United in 2023.

Wyness insisted the Magpies have to find ways to support Howe in the transfer market after recent struggles on that front.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “We see the pictures of the Newcastle fans, the talk is always about how many years since they’ve won a trophy.

“Of course, every season that goes on – the pressure is still there.

“They’ve got the League Cup final but the FA Cup will be the one the purists wanted.

“It was a missed opportunity for Newcastle.

“I think there is an underlying understanding with the fans for Eddie Howe, and what he’s done with this squad.

“But there is an overwhelming need to win something.

“I think Howe is okay for now. The owners will be happy with the progress overall, and I think they’re still fans of Howe.

“They’ve now got to find ways to support him with the PSR situations this summer.

“I think they’ll give him a really good backing.”

Newcastle fans devastated after team news latest

Newcastle fans have voiced their frustration with Sven Botman set to undergo knee surgery – ruling him out of the League Cup final.

Newcastle will already be without Anthony Gordon for the final, following his red card for violent conduct against Brighton.

The Magpies have also seen star full-back Lewis Hall ruled out for the rest of the season in recent days.

Howe’s side travel to West Ham on Monday (10 March) before taking on Liverpool at Wembley on 16 March.
