Ederson’s Man City exit ‘looks like it’s going to happen’ as £200k-a-week deal on cards

Ederson could be leaving Man City this summer with one-year left on his contract amid foreign transfer interest.

Man City have been busy in this summer’s transfer window, bringing in whole host of new players as they bid to take back their Premier League crown from Liverpool.

Exits of Kyle Walker to Burnley and Kevin De Bruyne to Napoli have been mirrored by the arrivals of Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves and Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan.

Pep Guardiola has been quick to revamp his ageing squad after an underwhelming campaign last year, finishing 13 points behind the Reds.

The 2024-25 season saw the Cityzens crash out of the Champions League early in the knockout phases as well as a shock FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace.

They faced a similar fate in the Club World Cup, losing to Al-Hilal in the Round of 16, as Guardiola admitted he didn’t know if their Premier League challenge next season will be “destroyed” by the tournament.

Nicky Weaver expects Ederson exit amid Galatasaray interest

With one-year left on his contract, Ederson has been linked with a move away this summer, most notably to Galatasaray.

The Turkish side are understood to have been in talks with the Brazilian, looking to offer him a three-year deal on £200,000 a week, according to The Times (23 July).

Former Man City goalkeeper Nicky Weaver feels that this summer could be the time the 31-year-old leaves, with the club having let his contract run this far down.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester (23 July) he said: “It’s gathered a bit of pace, especially in recent days. When it gets to this point, it almost looks like it’s going to happen.

“Most summers he gets linked with a move away but you never think it’s actually going to happen. This summer, I think we could actually see it happening.”

Weaver touched on the fact Man City tend not to let players they want to keep run down their deals, with talks likely to have transpired over the course of last season.

Yet, with talks not finalised, Weaver added: “The fact City have let the situation creep into the last year of his contract gives the player a lot more power in deciding what he wants to do.

“The ideal situation for me is he stays at City but it’s looking increasingly likely that he will go.”

Man City must solve keeper crisis

Football Insider verdict

Ederson’s uncertainty provides another headache for Guardiola as he tries to resolve the goalkeeper situation.

The issue has been exacerbated by back-up keeper Stefan Ortega still deciding over his future with one-year left on his contract.

City have also been interested in re-signing James Trafford from Burnley, who offers a potential solution to the keeper conundrum.

Despite the solid recruitment across the pitch this summer, the Cityzens must sort out their goalkeeper situation before the new season begins, to reassure the defensive backline.
