Edson Alvarez posts one-word message amid uncertainty over West Ham future

Edson Alvarez is one of several West Ham United players who could be on their way out of the London Stadium this summer.

West Ham face a difficult transfer window ahead after last summer’s outlay of over £130million didn’t have the desired results, as Graham Potter‘s side languished in lower mid-table for the entire campaign.

The Irons only once climbed above twelfth in the table and hovered at arm’s length above the relegation zone for much of the season, before two wins from their last three games resulted in a 14th-place finish.

Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus were revelations in their first campaign after West Ham swooped to sign them from Ajax in 2023, but both players’ form last term – particularly Alvarez’s – left a lot to be desired.

Alvarez sends message to ‘brother’ as West Ham exit looms

Although both Alvarez and Kudus experienced a huge drop-off in form last term compared to their first seasons, the Ghanaian has still been heavily linked with a move away as Newcastle line up a transfer bid.

Alvarez’s future is less clear with Hammers fans happy to see him leave, but after West Ham missed the chance to offload the midfielder to Monaco in January, it’s unclear how many suitors he’ll now have.

The Mexico international’s current focus is on the CONCACAF Gold Cup though, and after El Tri’s 2-0 win over Suriname on 18 June, Alvarez shared a message on Instagram from a former Ajax team-mate.

Suriname’s Liam van Gelderen briefly played for Ajax in 2022 and posted an image of himself and Alvarez on his Instagram story (21 June), and the West Ham star shared this with the message of: “Brother.”

West Ham rebuild dependent on Alvarez, Kudus transfers

Football Insider Verdict

Potter and other West Ham officials will certainly have an eye on this summer’s Gold Cup, particularly after Michail Antonio made his long-awaited return from a career-threatening injury for Jamaica.

Alvarez will also be hopeful that Mexico’s campaign in the tournament can help him to rediscover the form which deserted him in a West Ham shirt last season, potentially with one eye on the exit door.

Last summer’s lavish spending won’t be on the cards this time around, and if West Ham can raise funds via the sales of Kudus and Alvarez this summer, they’ll be in a hurry to wrap up any potential departures.
