Edson Alvarez reacts to West Ham statement over uncertainty at the club

Edson Alvarez has responded after West Ham provided an update on his future at the club ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

It has not been an easy ride for the Mexican since his arrival to England in May 2023.

Signed under current Everton manager David Moyes, the defensive midfielder was brought in to galvanise the middle of the park following their Conference League victory in the 2022-23 season.

In his first season in east London, Alvarez made 42 appearances in all competitions and pushed his way into the starting XI.

Discipline proved to be an issue for the ex-Ajax star as he racked up 17 yellow cards that season.

This trend continued under the short-lived reign of Julen Lopetegui, where the number 19 accumulated 31 yellow cards in all competitions in all competitions.

His abundance of cards included two red cards, which infuriated Hammers fans as they endured an arduous campaign last year.

Poor performances and ill-discipline left Alvarez as one of the favourites to leave the club in Graham Potter’s first summer with the Irons.

ESPN Mexico sources (17 July) understand that the holding midfielder had been told by the ex-Chelsea boss that he is no longer a part of his plans for next season.

Alvarez to stay at West Ham for now

In an Instagram (28 July) post on the club’s official account captioned: “look who’s arrived in NJ [New Jersey]”, pictures were posted of the Mexican joining up with his teammates for pre-season.

The midfielder formed an integral part of the Tricolor’s CONCACAF Gold Cup winning side, beating the USA 2-1 in the final at the start of July.

Alvarez, who scored the winning goal, joined up with the Irons after three weeks off following his international exploits.

The photos of his reunion with the Hammers included an embrace with Tomas Soucek as the 27-year-old liked the post.

Football Insider verdict

The Irons are facing a huge shake-up in the squad this season prior to Potter’s first full season in charge.

A 14th-place finish last year was far below fans’ expectations, given they won the Conference league two seasons before.

The former Brighton manager has acted fast to replace the outbound Vladimir Coufal, bringing in former Southampton full-back Kyle Walker-Peters to the London Stadium.

The sale of Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham will provide the Englishman with vital funds to reinvest into an ageing West Ham side.

Where Alvarez fits in Potter’s plans remains to be seen, particularly as he has just come back from his summer exploits.

Currently, the east London side are in an awkward position in the middle of park with several central midfielders’ contracts set to expire in 2027.

This includes 30-year-olds Soucek and James Ward-Prowse, suggesting their Mexican counterpart may be given more time to prove himself with his own contract running until 2028.

Yet, Potter’s reputation for rapidly developing youth talent could indicate a different approach to Hammers recruitment.

Upon the Englishman’s arrival, academy star Oliver Scarles quickly progressed to the senior squad, featuring 15 times in the Premier League 2024-25.

Emphasis on young players may be focused on the midfield with Freddie Potts and George Earthy in line to play a bigger role next season.
