Ellis Simms could be handed unexpected Everton role after source’s reveal – pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Ellis Simms could be the answer to the goalscoring problems at Everton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender claimed Simms’ future at Goodison Park is uncertain after Frank Lampard was sacked.

On 21 January, Football Insider revealed that Sunderland are in talks to re-sign the 22-year-old after he was recalled from his loan on 1 January.

The Championship side have remained in touch with the Toffees over taking the striker on a new loan deal.

Sunderland’s hopes of re-signing Simms had been bolstered when Everton closed in on the capture of Villarreal forward Arnaut Danjuma.

But, yesterday (24 January), this site revealed that Tottenham have hijacked Everton’s deal for the forward even though he had completed all medical tests and agreed a deal at Goodison Park.

Hutton said Simms’ future at the Merseyside club is uncertain.

It depends who the manager is first, he will make that decision,” he told Football Insider.

I think under Frank Lampard, he needed reinforcements, he needed somebody to come back and help. [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin was out injured.

[Neal] Maupay was not the answer for me. He scores the odd goal, he works hard, he is technically very good but he is not a regular goalscorer.

They needed a different option so I think that was why Frank recalled him. He has done well at Sunderland, even up at Hearts he was a handful, so you understand why they have done that.

It is really down to the manager and if they see him fitting in to the way he wants to play football.
