Levy emailed Tottenham forward bid out of the blue – report

By Harry Sykes

Tottenham remain interested in signing Wilfried Zaha this summer after a formal bid was rebuffed by Crystal Palace, according to a report.

The Mail claim Palace are faced with losing the winger, 24, for a second time as Spurs prepare a concerted attempt to entice him from Selhurst Park.

It is said that Tottenham’s initial interest “came out of the blue” when chairman Daniel Levy emailed a bid to the Palace hierarchy last August.

But the south Londoners are very aware now of how much the Premier League’s second-placed side want to sign Zaha, who has revived his career in the last two seasons after a failed move to Manchester United.

The Mail report that Palace will offer to make Zaha the best-paid player in their history in an attempt to fend off interest from Tottenham and any other clubs.

Indeed, Spurs are unlikely to be willing to match the £100,000-a-week basic salary that Sam Allardyce’s team are prepared to hand the Ivory Coast international.

Yet, Zaha, who has three more years remaining on his current £35,000-a-week deal, could have a big decision to make on where he plays his football next season.

Football Insider verdict:

If Zaha gets the chance to join Tottenham, he should jump at it. Obviously, the sums will have to add up, and Spurs chief Levy is notorious for his low-ball offers, but they are clearly a team on the up. With an exciting young team who are all tied to long-term contracts, a highly rated manager and a state-of-the-art stadium on the way, there is a sense that Tottenham are going places. One thing Mauricio Pochettino’s squad lacks is a dazzling ball-carrier. Zaha has the capability to provide the missing ingredient.

In other Tottenham news, the London giants have won the race to sign a 32-goal striker who has taken the league by storm.
