‘Embarrassed’ – Caixinha hits out at Rangers squad after semi-final defeat v Motherwell

By James Black

Pedro Caixinha has hit out at his Rangers squad by claiming they “embarrassed” the club in Sunday’s 2-0 Scottish League Cup semi-final defeat by Motherwell.

Louis Moult’s second-half double sealed the win for the Steelmen in a hot-tempered game at Hampden Park.

The Gers never looked like winning against Stephen Robinson’s side and face a quick return to action when they face Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday in the Premiership.

Caixinha had said after the game that he took responsibility for the defeat but is obviously not shying away from criticising his players publicly either and has been quoted by PA journalist Andy Newport on his personal Twitter account as saying his players “embarrassed” him and the club.

Rangers fans are growing unhappy with the Portuguese boss after a series of high-profile failures since taking charge in March.

Caixinha has presided over the humiliating Europa League loss to Luxembourgers Progres Niederkorn, a 5-1 Old Firm defeat by Celtic and the end of a 26-year undefeated run against Aberdeen at Ibrox.

The Gers currently sit in third place in the Scottish Premiership – six points off leaders Celtic and Aberdeen – and face Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday before a testing trip to Murrayfield to play Hearts.

Caixinha’s side could end up in second place by next week so despite the pressure that appears to be building, it’s unlikely Caixinha will be replaced in the short-term at least.

In other Rangers news, Caixinha has said who should be to blame for the Hampden Park loss.
