‘Embarrassing’ – Exclusive: Pundit baffled as Rangers man ‘goes after’ Scottish FA
Frank McAvennie warned Steven Gerrard to be careful what he wished for after the Rangers manager criticised the consistency of refereeing in Scotland.
The former Hoops and St Mirren striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested that the Light Blues have been on the end of some fortunate decisions this season.
Rangers are the only team in the Scottish Premiership to not have a penalty awarded against them this season.
Speaking to the BBC on Tuesday, Gerrard revealed that he has ‘not been pleased’ with the consistency of the Scottish FA’s disciplinary system since his arrival to Ibrox.
It came after Alfredo Morelos was handed a three-game suspension for a stamp on Hibernian defender Ryan Porteous last Wednesday.
When asked by Football Insider if the Gers boss was right to question the standard of the refereeing, McAvennie said: “Listen, I would be careful what you wish for.
“Rangers have not had one penalty awarded against them this season. Not one this year, it is embarrassing.
“I would be careful not to upset the referees and go after them because I think they are on Rangers’ side at the moment!
“What Morelos did was not right. If Scott Brown or anybody does that I want them off because it was so close to the boy’s knee. It could have finished him.”
Speaking earlier this week, Gerrard said: “”I have looked at the (Morelos) incident a lot and I don’t think there is a case for us to defend but having said that, it doesn’t mean we are pleased with everything that happened in that game, or has happened during this season or previous seasons.
“So it is something behind the scenes that myself and the board are working very hard on, trying to find better solutions in terms of disciplinary and the processes that go on.”
