Kevin Phillips has claimed that Jordan Pickford must find consistency at Everton if he is to remain England number one.

The former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the wry smile the 26-year-old gives when he makes a mistake is “out of embarrassment”.

Pickford was at fault on numerous occasions in the 3-0 loss to Wolves last weekend with some fans disgruntled with the reactions he gave to his mistakes.

Ex-Leeds United forward Noel Whelan is adamant that the Toffees shot-stopper has an attitude problem.

Phillips defended Pickford but insisted he needs to reduce his mistakes if he wants critics off his back.

“He is a young guy and that reaction is out of embarrassment,” he told Football Insider.

“He has been around a while but he is still young.

“Unfortunately, when you are England keeper and you make mistakes, it will be highlighted.

“He is a great keeper. He will make mistakes but the big thing for Jordan now is finding that consistency because there are English keepers around him that could replace him.

“He is a great keeper but it is down to him to limit the mistakes because that is the only way to get people off his back.”

Nick Pope and Dean Henderson have earned plaudits for their performances for Burnley and Sheffield United this season.

Pope is in pole position to land this season’s Golden Glove with 14 clean sheets to his name.
