Tottenham close to sealing transfer after midfielder jets in for talks - report

By Harry Sykes

Tottenham midfielder Anton Walkes is on the verge of a transatlantic transfer to the MLS, according to a report.

The unofficial Tottenham academy Twitter account has claimed that the defensive midfielder, 19, is close to sealing a January switch to the American league.

The account reported on Wednesday night that Walkes “is likely to join an MLS side on loan” after jetting to the US at the start of the week “for talks” about a transfer.

Anchorman Walkes is part of the next generation of Spurs academy products that hope to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Harry Kane and become established members of the first team.

He is among a crop of exciting players in their late teens who include attacking midfielder Josh Onomah, 19, centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers, 18, playmaker Marcus Edwards, 17, and right-back Kyle Walker-Peters, 19.

Walkes has made one senior appearance to date, a 10-minute substitute display in September’s 5-0 League Cup win over League One side Gillingham.

He has spent most of his time in youth-team football in central midfield but has predominantly been used by the club’s Under-23s this season at centre-back.

Walkes has made 17 appearances for Tottenham’s development side this season, 12 of which have come in Premier League 2.

The academy account has a growing reputation as a reliable source of Spurs news, and has broken a number of stories about youth-team players and coaches at the club, including the revelation last summer that Edwards had committed to a new White Hart Lane deal.
