Emerson Royal could U-turn on Tottenham future after ‘big’ development – Robinson

Matt Doherty’s injury has handed Emerson Royal a big opportunity at Tottenham, according to Paul Robinson.

The former White Hart Lane number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Emerson, 23, can now nail down a starting spot in north London ahead of next season.

As reported by Sky Sports (11 April), Doherty has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a medial collateral ligament injury.

It comes after a heavy tackle on the right-back from Aston Villa’s Matty Cash on 9 April.

Emerson Royal is Tottenham’s first choice right wing-back in Doherty’s absence.

The Brazilian has endured an indifferent start to life at Spurs since arriving from Barcelona in the summer.

According to Marca (9 March), Emerson was open to the idea of leaving Tottenham for Atletico Madrid earlier this year.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if game time could see that position change, Robinson said:

“Doherty being out won’t hamper Spurs too much as they have Emerson Royal, [Sergio] Reguilon and [Ryan] Sessegnon fit at the moment.

“It will give Emerson plenty of game time for the rest of the season. This is a big opportunity for him. He can only play himself out of that team. He has got that position now until the end of the season.

“I think those wing-back positions are Emerson and Reguilon’s until the end of the season. They have a chance now to prove that they’re deserving of a regular starting spot next season.”

In other news, Campbell has named the three Tottenham players who will clinch their top-four finish ahead of Arsenal.
