Emerson Royal: Tottenham tipped to agree near-£20m deal by expert – ‘he’ll be gone first days of the window’
Tottenham should sanction Emerson Royal’s exit this summer, even if it means taking a loss on a player they signed less than 12 months ago.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
According to Marca (9 March), European giants Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan are interested in the 23-year-old defender ahead of the summer window.
Matt Doherty has been preferred to the Brazilian in recent weeks following a run of unconvincing performances.
On 31 August, this site revealed Spurs had agreed a £25.7million fee with Barcelona for Royal.
Wenham would now be happy to see him leave for closer to £20million.
“Personally, I would let him go,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“It’s all well and good to say he needs time to settle but we need instant improvements to our full-backs.
“We don’t have time to waste on players who are getting acclimatised to the Premier League.
“It is a huge detriment to our team that our full-backs currently don’t offer us much.
“If there was an opportunity to break even on Royal and just make that money back or even something like £5million less than what we paid, I would take it.
“I would be perfectly happy, and expect, for him to be gone in the first days of the window.”

Royal has managed just one assist in 30 Spurs appearances this term.
His contract runs until 2026.
