Emi Martinez reacts after confirmed Aston Villa departure
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has sent a message to Emi Buendia after contract news and an exit from the club was officially announced.
Emi Buendia has joined the German side on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy included in the deal [Fabrizio Romano on X], while also extending his deal at Villa Park.
The Argentine’s departure has sparked reactions, with former Villa player Gabby Agbonlahor offering criticism of the move.
However, Buendia shared his excitement on Instagram, welcoming the new challenge at Leverkusen, saying: “Very happy and excited to start this new challenge. I’m ready to work hard and fight for this club, looking forward to having lots of success together. Let’s go”.
Martinez responded with heart and fire emojis, whilst Matty Cash commented, “All the best bro.”
Aston Villa eye replacement for Emi Buendia after Leverkusen loan
After suffering a cruciate ligament injury in August 2023, Buendia missed the entirety of last season and has found it challenging to break back into the starting lineup. He has featured in just 11 Premier League games for Villa this season.
Football Insider revealed in December revealed that Unai Emery was open to allowing Buendia to leave the club in the January transfer window due to his limited appearances this term.
Although Leeds United had previously shown interest, recent reports linking him to Bayer Leverkusen made the move seem imminent to fans, and it has since come to fruition.

Villa have been active in the transfer market, securing Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia. It now seems likely that they will look for a replacement for Buendia. Joao Felix has recently emerged as a potential target.
The prospect of Felix joining under Emery has generated excitement among Villa supporters, with many eager to see how the Chelsea forward would fit into their setup.
Football Insider Verdict
Despite Buendia leaving, it offers a new challenge to both him and the club. As they fight for a European spot this season, it looks like they want to upgrade on their depth.
