Emi Martinez responds to ‘star’ Jacob Ramsey after major Aston Villa breakthrough

Aston Villa ace Jacob Ramsey posted a message to fans after the club cruised into the Champions League quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old was introduced from the bench for the final 24 minutes of the 3-0 win at Villa Park.

Two goals in a stunning performance from Marco Asensio, and a tidy finish from Ian Maatsen guaranteed the Midlands club’s place in the next round of the Champions League, and a double-header against the in-form PSG that knocked Liverpool out.

The win almost came with the positive news that both Asensio and Rashford’s loan deals are now paid for, with a permanent deal for the English winger potentially on the cards, depending on how the Villains perform in the FA Cup, and Champions League moving forward.

However, Aston Villa will face competition from Barcelona and Bayern Munich for Rashford, due to his markedly improved form since joining the club on loan in January.

Ramsey enjoyed a break-out season with Villa in the 2021/22 season, and followed it up with another strong set of performances the following year.

However, a major injury limited the English winger to just 16 Premier League appearances last season, and the academy graduate has been used less frequently since January, with Unai Emery rotating between him and Rashford.

Aston Villa signing Marcus Rashford permanently may cause Jacob Ramsey to leave

Football Insider Verdict

Ramsey was linked with a move to Tottenham in last summer’s transfer window, but Emery was keen to keep his young star at Villa Park.

The 23-year-old has been on the brink of establishing himself as a truly top-class winger for a number of seasons now, without ever actually breaking through.

Injuries have hampered Ramsey’s development, and the winger remains frustratingly inconsistent.

On his day, the former Doncaster loanee glides past fullbacks, in a way that is reminiscent to how Jack Grealish used to play during his time at Villa.

However, following the signing of Rashford, Ramsey has seen his playing time curtailed, rotating with the on-loan winger.

Should Villa break the bank for the England international, it begs the question as to whether the England U21 international will remain at Villa Park, as he will undoubtedly become the second choice at left-wing.
