England fans want Phil Foden axed after source’s ‘jaw-dropping’ reveal
England fans online have called for Phil Foden to be axed from Gareth Southgate’s starting XI to take on Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday night.
Three Lions supporters have taken to social media to berate Southgate’s team selection and substitutions during the opening two Group C clashes with Serbia and Denmark, many focusing on what they perceive to be a frustrating lack of impact from Foden compared to his output with Manchester City – which sources tell Football Insider [16 June] could see him land a “jaw-dropping” new contract later this summer.
The 24-year-old has managed just four goals and eight assists in 36 England caps to date, despite his status as the Premier League Player of the Season.
Many argue Foden performs better in a “number 10” role and has been “shoehorned” into the XI by Southgate in an unnatural position on the left wing, despite natural wingers Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze being left on the bench.
Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish – also renowned wide players – were left out of the squad altogether, with Football Insider revealing the duo could leave Manchester United [1 June] and Man City respectively [3 June] citing their omissions.
England fans frustrated with Foden on social media
Coming off the back of a decorated season at the Etihad Stadium, Foden’s place in the England XI – and certainly on the left-hand flank – has come into question by fans.
In other news, Alan Hutton claims friend and former teammate Grealish will remain at Man City despite his snub by Southgate.
