‘Enormous’ – Stefan Borson drops verdict after ‘record-breaking’ Wrexham deal agreed

Wrexham are continuing their march towards the Premier League after agreeing another game-changing deal.

Wrexham are majority owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney), who have helped the club achieve three successive promotions from the National League to the Championship.

Reynolds and Mac purchased Wrexham in February 2021, with the deal seeing the Hollywood stars invest £2million into the Welsh club.

It was later announced in October 2024 the Allyn family, which has a net worth of more than £1.5billion, had bought a minority stake in the Red Dragons.

In a new ownership update, it was confirmed on Monday (8 December) Apollo Sports Capital has purchased a minority stake in Wrexham

Wrexham’s valuation is ‘enormous’ after new investment

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the deal with Apollo will almost certainly be a record for the Championship.

Wrexham were recently valued at up to £350m following their rise through the EFL.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Apollo’s investment, Borson said: “We don’t know the sort of valuation or whether even they’ve taken the shares from the club or whether they’ve bought the shares from Reynolds and McElhenney.

“Either way, the implied valuation of the club is enormous, and it will almost certainly be a record for the Championship. But it will also probably be so significant the valuation that you have to look at it and go, ‘This is really significant stuff because Apollo are enormous’.

“They’ve tended to invest in bigger sports opportunities than Wrexham, but they obviously like something about the Wrexham story. We know some of the elements there, but it’s a very significant development.”

Apollo, which has more than £675bn worth of assets under management, became the majority owners of La Liga giants Atletico Madrid last month.

Wrexham have matched Ipswich’s latest takeover deal

Elsewhere, fellow Championship side Ipswich Town secured a takeover deal worth around £350m earlier this month.

Borson insisted Wrexham’s latest investment is positive for the Championship as the valuations of second-tier clubs continue to rise.

“I think it’s good for the Championship on the back of the Ipswich fundraise last week,” said Borson.

“Ipswich raised money at a valuation of £350m. If this is that sort of level, which I expect it to be, it’s really very significant for the read-through value of these clubs outside of the Premier League.

“Now, where it all ends, I don’t know, because there’s only a certain amount of seats at the table in the Premier League or at the top of the Premier League, and they can’t all be successful, either financially or just in terms of generating proper revenue, and there is a limit to how much people can spend on football.

“I don’t know how it will actually perform as an investment for Apollo, but it’s definitely significant that they’re prepared to write a cheque for Wrexham.”

Wrexham could be set to spend big in the January transfer window as they look to make a push towards the play-off places in the second half of the season.
