Enzo Fernandez sends message to Chelsea teammates after omission
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez was impressed with his side’s performance after being omitted for their 2-0 Europa Conference League win over FC Heidenheim on Thursday (November 28).
Since joining, Maresca has implemented a two-squad system, preferring certain players for certain competitions, with Fernandez, 23, falling out of favour following a tough start to the season.
Fernandez was then dropped for crucial league games against Man United and Arsenal, instead featuring in cup ties against Newcastle and FC Noah.
He has made 16 appearances for Chelsea so far this season, starting twice in the Europa Conference League and seven times in the Premier League.
The midfielder has since worked his way back into Enzo Maresca’s good graces after bagging a goal and an assist in their 2-1 Premier League win over Leicester last Saturday. This meant he was not in the squad for Thursday night’s win against Heidenheim.
His exploits against Maresca’s former team brought Fernandez’s tally to seven-goal contributions in five appearances across all competitions for club and country.
With Reece James out injured yet again, the World Cup winner was named acting captain in the game against Leicester.

Goals from Christopher Nkunku and Mykhaylo Mudryk secured all three points for Chelsea against FC Heidenheim, keeping them top of the new Europa Conference League group phase.
Impressed by another solid team performance on the continent, Fernandez took to Instagram to congratulate his teammates.
Maresca’s side are well on their way to another European title, which would make them the first club to win all three major trophies.
Attention will return to the Premier League this weekend, however, with Chelsea set to face fellow top-four contender Aston Villa on Sunday (December 1).
