Enzo Maresca may ‘threaten to quit Chelsea immediately’ after ‘serious interference’
Enzo Maresca may have to make a decision about his future at Chelsea after his comments towards the ownership.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes “serious interference” could be at play at Chelsea.
Maresca said he had ‘the worst 48 hours‘ at Chelsea prior to their 2-0 win against Everton in the Premier League.
The cryptic comments have put Maresca’s future in doubt at Chelsea, though the Italian’s job at Stamford Bridge looks safe for now.
Enzo Maresca could threaten to leave Chelsea
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Maresca’s position with the fanbase has now “weakened.“
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Maresca should consider his position as manager if there has been any “serious interference.”
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Now, if he is getting serious interference, and I’ve had it before from an owner, and it is the worst in the world. I mean I’ve threatened and the manager, we both threatened to go immediately with interference from owners coming in.
“And so you’ve got to think, if Maresca was getting serious interference, then he’s got to make that known to them and make a decision. Does he go? Do they have to sack him or whatever the situation is?
“Normally with managers, they’ll want to get sacked because they want to get paid off. But to do it publicly, I think weakened him in terms of his position with the fans.
“And I think overall the club didn’t come out of this looking very good. So I think he’s probably regretting the fact he spoke off the cuff and so cryptically rather than actually giving facts or stating what it really was. So I think we won’t be hearing much from Mr. Maresca again in the coming weeks.”

Maresca could oversee cup success
Maresca still oversaw Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup, which puts the Blues into the semi-finals of the competition.
It is a chance for Maresca to win a third trophy in charge of the club in just his second season since joining from Leicester City.
The Premier League title still looks slightly out of reach for Chelsea and Maresca this season, with an eight-point gap between them and leaders Arsenal.
