Enzo Maresca must unleash wantaway Chelsea star after Bayern Munich calamity

Chelsea fell to a dismal 3-1 defeat away at Bayern Munich in the Champions League, with Enzo Maresca’s defenders having a particularly bad day.

Harry Kane broke a Champions League record after bagging a brace on the way to Bayern’s three-goal rout of Maresca’s side.

Kane’s first came from the penalty spot following a Moises Caicedo foul, and many, including Pet Nevin, thought it was ‘strange’ how long it took for the referee to give Bayern’s penalty against Chelsea.

Chelsea’s loss to Bayern Munich got off to the worst possible start with Trevoh Chalobah scoring an own goal, before Kane’s penalty doubled the lead, with the Englishman adding a third after Cole Palmer got Chelsea back into the contest.

Chelsea’s defence was awful against Bayern Munich

It was a tough evening for three of Chelsea’s backline, with Tosin Adarbioyo, Chalobah and Malo Gusto all having torrid games.

Gusto came up against Michael Olise, who has begun the season in world-beating form, while Adarabioyo was slated by Chelsea fans on social media.

Chalobah’s own goal capped off a woeful night for Chelsea’s backline, who came under their first genuine stern test of the season at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

Adarabioyo only won a third of his duels in the match, with Chalobah only winning half of his, while also being dragged into the wide areas too often, according to his Sofascore heat map.

Gusto registered an assist for Palmer’s effort, but that’s where his good performance stopped as he lost possession nine times, and one of those occasions led to a goal for Bayern Munich.

Wesley Fofana must come into the Chelsea XI vs Man United

After Chelsea’s suspect defensive showing, Maresca may be forced to turn to one star who was embroiled in controversy this summer.

Wesley Fofana deleted all links to Chelsea on his social media this summer, the usual hallmarks of a wantaway player in the modern era.

However, Maresca has since been insistent that Fofana has no desire to leave the club and has been working to return from his year-long injury.

Fofana played in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Brentford last Saturday, and looks in line to make another start after Maresca’s side faced defensive calamity at Bayern Munich.
