Enzo Maresca in trouble at Chelsea amid ‘whispers he’s not picking the team’
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is making a mistake sending cryptic messages to the board in public.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who states that Maresca is not in a “strong position” at the club.
Maresca may have to make a decision about his Chelsea future, after claiming it was the “worst 48 hours” he had at the club prior to their win over Everton.
Chelsea are not set to sack Maresca and will continue to back the manager in the January transfer window despite his comments.
Enzo Maresca ‘wrapped over the knuckles’
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Chelsea‘s “history of firings” means Maresca is putting himself in dangerous territory.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Maresca should be sorting out any issues behind closed doors.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Strange. You know, there’s a whole number of people coming out saying things now in media situations that normally wouldn’t happen. And this was another one of them, and he was a bit cryptic.
“And given the history of firings, I don’t think Maresca’s in that strong a position to start having a go at the management above him. The rumours coming out are that it’s supposedly, at least, people trying to interfere with team selection.
“And I think the point was that he was wrapped over the knuckles, and he hasn’t said anything really much since, because those sort of things should be handled internally rather than externally.
“And I think that’s what Maresca was wrong to do was to air the dirty laundry in public when this sort of thing should be taken up internally and fought about internally.“

Raheem Sterling could make January move
Chelsea could be set for another active January transfer window, with Maresca still looking to offload Raheem Sterling.
Sterling is part of Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’ and has not appeared for the club this season, and the 31-year-old was on loan at Arsenal last campaign.
Leeds are set to make a January move for Sterling, as the Whites look to bolster their attack to increase their chances of Premier League survival.
