Eric Dier: Tottenham two-man defender shortlist revealed – sources

A potential January exit for Eric Dier could free up space in the Tottenham squad for a new centre-back signing, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (29 September) that Dier, 29, does not feature in Ange Postecoglou’s plans despite his return to the bench for recent games.

The England international has under 12 months to run on his Spurs contract.

Tottenham were keen to add another centre-back in the summer window despite already moving for Wolfsburg ace Micky van de Ven.

It is believed Fulham ace Tosin Adarabioyo and Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba were on the shortlist – but moves for either player failed to materialise.

Postecoglou remains ready to add to his squad despite Van de Ven’s contribution to a strong start in England for the Australian.

Adarabioyo is into the final year of his contract at Fulham and is currently on the treatment table with a groin strain.

Monaco were also widely linked with the ex-Man City ace, who made 29 appearances across all competitions last season.

Tapsoba is seen as a more premium option by club chiefs and could come with a much heftier price tag, especially in the mid-season window.

He has started every game for Leverkusen this season after extending his contract earlier this month.

Xabi Alonso’s side have tied the Burkina Faso international down to a new deal running until June 2028 after his stellar form last season.

Van de Ven has lined up alongside Cristian Romero at the heart of the Tottenham defence, with Postecoglou’s side conceding seven goals in six games this term.

Dier, who was the subject of interest in the summer, is yet to play a single minute for Spurs this term.
