Erik ten Hag is new bookies sack favourite after Man United board’s update

Erik ten Hag has the ‘full backing’ of Man United chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth following the club’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

The Dutch manager, 54, was nearly sacked at the end of last season following a disappointing eighth-place Premier League finish and pressure is mounting yet again.

Liverpool cruised to victory thanks to a first-half brace from Luis Diaz and a 56th-minute goal from Mo Salah who’s first-time strike beat an outstretched Andre Onana in the United goal.

This was United’s second league defeat in their first three games having lost 2-1 in added time to Brighton the week before.

Having spent £176 million on the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, and Joshua Zirkzee, Ten Hag has been tasked with returning the club to former glories.

CEO Berrarda, who was brought in from rivals Man City to help re-establish Man United as a title-winning side issued a statement regarding Ten Hag’s future.

As quoted by The Athletic, Berrarda said, “Erik has our full backing and we have worked very closely together in this transfer window. We’re going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team.

“In terms of the contract, that was a decision that was taken prior to both of our arrivals. But we’re very happy with that decision.”

He also insisted that Ten Hag will continue to have the club’s backing even if results worsen, adding: “Absolutely. We think Erik is the right coach for us and we’re fully backing him.”

According to Sky Bet, Ten Hag is the joint-favourite to be the next Premier League boss to get the sack, with the Dutchman currently priced at 11/4.
