Erik ten Hag told ‘stamp your authority’ after ‘strange’ Man United update – pundit

David de Gea should not be given the Man United captaincy.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about who should lead the Red Devils into the 2022-23 season.

Harry Maguire, 29, remains the Man United captain as it stands, despite a poor 2021-22 season in which he came under fire from fans and pundits

On Saturday (4 June) The Sun reported David de Gea, 31, is the overwhelming favourite to be named the new club captain among the first-team squad

McAvennie insists Erik ten Hag should pick the captain and urged him to stamp his authority on his new squad.

“That’s a strange one,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Why they are listening to those players, how can you have a vote? Most of the players won’t be there next season.

“Ronaldo can’t get it because he won’t be there the season after. I would have thought Bruno Fernandes would have been the ideal character.

“He would be ideal. There are a lot of players who they have to get rid of, so why should they be allowed to vote?

“The manager has to make a decision, stamp your authority if there is a conflict between the players.”

Bruno Fernandes, 27, is contracted at Old Trafford until 2026 after signing a new deal on April 1 2022.

He scored 10 goals in 36 Premier League games during the 2021-22 season.
