Tottenham took a vital step towards qualifying for the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League by seeing off one of Europe’s big guns.
With Real Madrid the hot group favourites, Borussia Dortmund are widely seen as Spurs’ main rivals for the other place in the post-Christmas stages of Europe’s top competition.
The repercussions of this victory, secured by a Harry Kane double and an early Heung-Min Son strike, cannot be underestimated.
Spurs finally bared their teeth in the Champions League after last season’s whimpering performances, and went some way to burying their Wembley hoodoo.
On a night when the only downer was the late red card for Jan Vertonghen, there were also some sparkling performances from some of Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
