Ethan Nwaneri could replace Arsenal superstar in starting XI – sources

Ethan Nwaneri has had a breakout season for Arsenal and could soon be putting serious pressure on Martin Odegaard’s place in the starting XI, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Odegaard will face “pressure on his place” due to Nwaneri’s rapid rise through the ranks.

O’Rourke added that the teenager is expected to “push to be a regular”, having already proved himself as a dependable option for Mikel Arteta. The 18-year-old has enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring nine goals and providing two assists across competitions.

Football Insider previously revealed that Arsenal are closing in on securing a new contract for Nwaneri, aiming to fend off growing interest from Premier League rivals including Man City and Chelsea.

His current deal runs until 2027 after he committed his future to the Gunners in 2023, turning down advances from several top sides at the time. But the club are now eager to secure an even longer-term agreement, reflective of his growing importance at the Emirates.

With Odegaard’s recent form coming under scrutiny, Arteta may soon be forced into a decision on how best to accommodate the rising star.

Arsenal fans lose patience with Martin Odegaard amid internal concerns

After their recent defeat to PSG in the Champions League, Arsenal fans criticised Martin Odegaard for his performance, with many calling for him to be stripped of the captaincy.

The Norwegian was eventually replaced by Nwaneri in the closing stages of the match, and the youngster made an immediate impact by creating a key chance for Gabriel Martinelli in a brief but lively cameo.

It’s been a frustrating campaign for the Arsenal captain, who has scored just twice in the Premier League so far. Football Insider also revealed that Arsenal staff have concerns over Odegaard‘s fitness and his overall contribution this season.

With Nwaneri showing the kind of energy and creative spark that has often been missing from Odegaard’s displays, pressure is mounting on the skipper to retain his place in Arteta’s starting XI.

Arsenal open talks with Thomas Partey over new contract

While the club are working to secure Nwaneri’s long-term future, they’ve also opened contract talks with one of their most experienced players.

Arsenal appear to have changed their stance on Thomas Partey’s future, with negotiations now underway over a new deal.

The midfielder’s current contract expires this summer, but following his return to a key role in Arteta’s side, the club are keen to keep him at the Emirates beyond the end of the season.
