Euro giants make contact with Tottenham over 27-year-old – journalist
By Harvey Byrne
European giants Barcelona have made contact with Tottenham over right-back Kyle Walker, according to a journalist.
The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Spurs since the turn of the year and last week the Mirror claimed that Manchester City were to begin talks with the north London club.
Now, it would seem that La Liga giants Barcelona have joined the hunt with beIN Sports correspondent Tancredo Palmeri reporting via his personal Twitter account that the Spanish side had made an approach.
Walker was usually a standout star for Tottenham and he started 26 of the club’s first 28 Premier League matches last season.
However, following reports that he was looking for a way out he started just four of Spurs’ last 10 league encounters with Kieran Trippier favoured for big matches like the Arsenal clash and final match at White Hart Lane against Manchester United.
But, Walker is also still contracted to Tottenham until 2021 after signing a new deal in September and the north London club are likely to want big money for a player they brought in for £9million in 2009.
Barcelona, meanwhile have youth graduate Sergi Roberto as their first choice right-back, but they may be looking to bolster the position.
Football Insider verdict:
Walker is one of Tottenham’s star players, but it is clear that he wants higher wages and Spurs are unwilling to break their bank for the now 27-year-old. Now, the England international should not be replaced by Trippier, as it was shown prior to reports that Walker wanted to leave that he was the standout first choice for the right-back position. This should mean whatever Tottenham receive for Walker they should look to spend it on his replacement and if the club do earn £40million from his sale the could certainly bring in another up and coming player who can hold the position for a number of years, just as Walker has done.
