Barcelona are planning to raid Tottenham for Christian Eriksen as they look for a replacement for Neymar, but the Spaniards may potentially have to spend over £100million to land their new top target, according to a report.
The Independent claims that the European giants have turned their attention to the Spurs ace after Liverpool asserted that they would not be selling Philippe Coutinho this summer with a statement on their official website on Friday.
After that major development, Barca have quickly refocused their efforts on Eriksen, whose playmaking attributes mean that he could be the long-term successor of Nou Camp legend Andres Iniesta.
It is understood that Barcelona were prepared for Liverpool’s tough stance on Coutinho leaving Anfield and see Eriksen as their contingency plan.
However the report says that Tottenham could also be hard to strike a deal with as the 25-year-old is currently tied down to a long-term deal he signed last September, although Daniel Levy may consider a sale if the deal was to exceed £100million.
Denmark international Eriksen was in phenomenal form for Tottenham last season, scoring 12 goals and supplying a stunning 23 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions.
Football Insider Verdict
After failing to sign a player all summer at this stage, Tottenham cannot afford to let another first-team player leave. Kyle Walker’s £50million switch to Manchester City is forgivable due to his form not being as good as it should be and the huge fee involved, however Eriksen is irreplaceable to Tottenham and is arguably the best attacking midfielder in the Premier League. His record speaks for itself and that is something that Levy cannot put a price on. The Spurs chairman has to start running the north London side like a football club and not a business, otherwise his and Mauricio Pochettino’s dream of silverware will diminish into thin air.
