‘Everton and Leeds secret deal mooted amid surprise over silence from Elland Road’

Leeds United and Everton may have reached a behind-the-scenes agreement over a potential multi-million pound payment, Stefan Borson has speculated.

Daniel Farke’s side is having an incredible season in the Championship, with Leeds sitting joint-top of the table alongside Sheffield United, followed shortly behind by Scott Parker’s Burnley.

The German is under pressure to deliver promotion back to the Premier League at Elland Road, having missed out so cruelly last term to Southampton in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

While the Whites finished 17th in the Premier League during the 2021/22 campaign, the team were relegated in the following season, and could now be owed money by Everton after they were found guilty of breaching PSR while avoiding the drop.

Their wrongdoings did not directly affect Leeds but missing out on potential prize money could have played a factor in the team’s dismal performances during the 2022/23 campaign.

Borson told Football Insider that Everton could owe Burnley £15million in compensation fees after missing out on broadcast money, and the finance expert believes a similar situation could arise at Elland Road.

Everton and Leeds United to come to agreement over compensation fees

Speaking live on talkSPORT [18 March, 12:41pm], Borson said: “Everton have admitted to overspending. Leeds might say, ‘We would have finished one place higher’, and one place higher was worth £2million in 2021/22.

“Arguably, they’ve got some kind of case for a small compensation, so it’s slightly surprising we haven’t heard anything from Leeds. It is possible that behind the scenes, Everton and Leeds have come to an arrangement regarding settling any disputes.”

Daniel Farke could stretch £2million in summer transfer window

Football Insider verdict

A lot is currently on the line at Elland Road, with no promotion to the Premier League likely leading to multiple big-name exits in the summer, such as Wilfried Gnonto, Ao Tanaka and Pascal Struijk.

Tanaka has already been dubbed too good for Leeds, impressing in the centre of midfield following his move from Fortuna Dusseldorf, and Farke will be keen to avoid a similar situation to last summer.

The Elland Road faithful were forced to watch as Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville all departed the club for Premier League sides, albeit at quite hefty fees.

Should Leeds finally secure promotion back to the top tier of English football, fans are desperate for Manor Solomon to remain at Leeds, and so too with Bournemouth loanee Joe Rothwell.

While the £2m might not seem like a lot to those in the Premier League already, it could make all the difference in the summer transfer window if Leeds are to avoid dropping straight back down again.
